Community Schools: Successful Implementation
The most effective charter schools seek to have a bilateral relationship with their communities. Come join a discussion led by three charter school organizations successfully implementing the community school model. Leaders from the Community School for Creative Education, DaVinci Rise High School, and Scholarship Prep will discuss their approaches to creating equitable and holistic school environments. Attendees will learn how to most effectively develop community partnerships, provide comprehensive mental health services, and implement trauma-informed practices.

Andrew Crowe is the Deputy Director at Scholarship Prep, a network of charter schools serving students in grades TK-8. Andrew has led the closing of the opportunity and achievement gaps as a teacher, instructional coach, site administrator, and district leader in Philadelphia, Hawai`i, and Southern California. Andrew holds a Bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame, a Master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and was a Teach For America corps member. He currently serves as the Chair of the Native American Alumni Board of Notre Dame.

Dennise Allotey is the current Principal and founding first-grade teacher of a TK-8th-grade public charter school located in Santa Ana, California. Her passion aligns with the school's mission and vision for bringing equity in education to students experiencing placement in foster families and housing insecurity. She has served the Santa Ana community for the past 6 years providing exceptional services and leadership to all underserved populations. Mrs. Allotey Holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Northern Arizona University.

Phillip Gedeon has over 17 years of experience in teaching, leadership, and instructional coaching that has positively influenced and reaffirmed his commitment to education reform in service of students, families and communities. Mr. Gedeon is the Head of School for Community School in Oakland, California, a Tk-8 charter school authorized by Alameda County Office of Education. As an educational leader, he brings an array of elements of high expectations, individualized attention and care to the development of the whole child. He is a champion for students of all backgrounds and a zealous advocate for special education, multilingual learners, high-quality and rigorous teaching, inclusivity, data driven practices, social-emotional learning and development, home-to-school partnerships, and trauma informed practices. He comes to CSCE with great joy, enthusiasm and commitment to the work.
