Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping K-12 education, but successful implementation requires …Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping K-12 education, but successful implementation requires more than enthusiasm for new tools: It requires a thoughtful legal framework, strong data governance, durable technical infrastructure, and practical change management. This session will bring together the perspectives of a Chief Technology Officer with legal counsel to provide school leaders with practical guidance on AI implementation, compliance, and risk management.
Participants will learn how to build and scale AI infrastructure for schools, including how to classify low-, medium-, and high-risk AI uses across administrative, staff, and student-facing settings; implement technical feasibility screenings; enforce technical and data integrity requirements with vendors; train staff on the use of this education technology; evaluate the role of AI assistants for staff, students, and administrators; monitor use across the school; and implement cybersecurity safeguards tailored for AI tools.
The session will also provide an overview of key legal requirements, including data privacy laws such as FERPA and CIPA; common legal pitfalls when using AI; contracting responsibilities for schools and vendors; negotiation strategies for EdTech agreements; AI policy considerations; and human-in-the-loop requirements. The presenters will address human oversight, bias, equity, accessibility, and AI working groups.
Through real-world examples, participants will leave with practical strategies to use and oversee AI technology more confidently, strengthen implementation practices, and reduce legal and operational risk.
