R2D2 Leads a Discussion: ChatGPT in the Harkness Classroom!
Breakout Session
ChatGPT has taken the country by storm, but how can you incorporate the technology into a discussion-based classroom? Harkness is an educational approach in which students discuss class readings, course material, and other texts. Session participants will learn how to conduct a Harkness discussion and meaningful ways to employ ChatGPT in the Harkness classroom, from leading a discussion to teaching critical analysis skills. Along the way, we will discuss positive applications of the program as well as avoiding pitfalls and potential misuse. Finally, we will conclude with a live Harkness discussion with ChatGPT and the workshop participants.
The session will share some background information about Harkness, both as a method of teaching and learning and as a philosophy. We will engage participants in a conversation about the skills and the values associated with discussion-based learning and student-led inquiry.
